How to be English [EPUB]

How to be English [EPUB]
How to be English by David Boyle
2015 | EPUB | 2.83MB

English culture is confused, muddled and often borrowed. The purpose of this book is to give the reader a complete grounding in the idiosyncrasies of the English and to pin down the absurdities and warmth of Englishness at its best. Featured in this book are such established English cultural behemoths as the Beatles, Big Ben and the Last Night of the Proms alongside less celebrated quirks such as meat pies and the working man's haven, the allotment. Here we celebrate the bell-ringers and Morris dancers, bowler hats ('the symbol of respectable Englishness') and cardigans ('symbol of staid middle-class solidarity'). We examine the brutality of Punch and Judy and our historic love of fairies, once so much a part of the English psyche that they were described as 'the British religion'. At once fond and irreverent, laudatory and curious, How to Be English might just teach us how to be English once again.

Being Maori-Chinese by Manying Ip
2008 | EPUB | 6.99MB

Presenting the stories behind several generations of seven Maori-Chinese families whose voices have seldom been heard before, this account casts a fascinating light on the historical and contemporary relations between Maori and Chinese in New Zealand. The two groups first came into contact in the late 19th century and often lived and interacted closely, leading to intermarriage and large families. By the 1930s, proximity and similarities had brought many Maori-Chinese families together, the majority of whom had to deal with cultural differences and discrimination. The growing political confidence of Maori since the 1970s and the more recent tensions around Asian immigration have put pressure on the relationship and the families’ dual identities.

Today’s Maori-Chinese, reaffirming their multiple roots and cultural advantages, are playing increasingly important roles in New Zealand society. This account is oral history at its most compelling—an absorbing read for anyone interested in the complex yet rewarding topic of cultural interactions between indigenous and immigrant groups.

Mecca: The Sacred City [EPUB]

Mecca: The Sacred City [EPUB]
Mecca: The Sacred City by Ziauddin Sardar
2014 | EPUB | 2.96MB

Mecca is the heart of Islam. It is the birthplace of Muhammad, the direction towards which Muslims turn when they pray and the site of pilgrimage which annually draws some three million Muslims from all corners of the world. Yet Mecca's importance goes beyond religion. What happens in Mecca and how Muslims think about the political and cultural history of Mecca has had and continues to have a profound influence on world events to this day.

In this captivating book, Ziauddin Sardar unravels the significance of Mecca. Tracing its history, from its origins as a 'barren valley' in the desert to its evolution as a trading town and sudden emergence as the religious centre of a world empire, Sardar examines the religious struggles and rebellions in Mecca that have powerfully shaped Muslim culture.

Interweaving stories of his own pilgrimages to Mecca with those of others, Sardar offers a unique insight into not just the spiritual aspects of Mecca – the passion, ecstasy and longing it evokes – but also the conflict between heritage and modernity that has characterised its history. He unpeels the physical, social and cultural dimensions that have helped transform the city and also, though accounts of such Orientalist travellers as Richard Burton and Charles Doughty, the strange fascination that Mecca has long inspired in the Western imagination. And, ultimately, he explores what this tension could mean for Mecca's future.

An illuminative, lyrical and witty blend of history, reportage and memoir, this outstanding book reflects all that is profound, enlightening and curious about one of the most important religious sites in the world.

A History of the Arab Peoples [EPUB]

A History of the Arab Peoples [EPUB]
A History of the Arab Peoples by Albert Hourani
2013 | EPUB | 2.4MB

In a bestselling work of profound and lasting importance, the late Albert Hourani told the definitive history of the Arab peoples from the seventh century, when the new religion of Islam began to spread from the Arabian peninsula westwards, to the present day. It is a masterly distillation of a lifetime of scholarship and a unique insight into a perpetually troubled region.

This updated edition by Malise Ruthven adds a substantial new chapter which includes recent events such as 9/11, the US invasion of Iraq and its bloody aftermath, the fall of the Mubarak and Ben Ali regimes in Egypt and Tunisia, and the incipient civil war in Syria, bringing Hourani's magisterial History up to date.

Ruthven suggests that while Hourani can hardly have been expected to predict in detail the massive upheavals that have shaken the Arab world recently he would not have been entirely surprised, given the persistence of the kin-patronage networks he describes in his book and the challenges now posed to them by a new media-aware generation of dissatisfied youth.

In a new biographical preface, Malise Ruthven shows how Hourani's perspectives on Arab history were shaped by his unique background as an English-born Arab Christian with roots in the Levant.

The Nuremberg Trials were held by the four victorious Allied forces of Great Britain, the USA, France and the USSR in the Palace of Justice, Nuremberg from November 1945 to October 1946. Famous for prosecuting the major German war criminals, they also tried the various groups and organisations that were at the heart of Nazi Germany.

This fascinating volume is concerned with the trial of the SS and includes all the testimony from the Nuremberg Trials regarding this enormous organisation, including the original indictment, the criminal case put forward for the SS, the closing speeches by the prosecution and defence and the final judgment.

Former SS members often wondered why they were charged as war criminals when they just performed their “normal” duty. The Military Tribunal at Nuremberg was to attempt to answer that question.

The witnesses called for the trial of the SS include Freidrich Karl von Eberstein, an early member of the Nazi Party, the SA, and the SS, Paul Hausser, one of the most eminent leaders of the Waffen-SS who vehemently defended their military role in the war, Georg Konrad Morgen, a former SS judge, and Wolfram Sievers, the Reich manager of the Ahnenerbe.

The Dust Bowl: An Illustrated History [EPUB]
The Dust Bowl: An Illustrated History by Ken Burns, Dayton Duncan
2012 | EPUB + MOBI | 34.49/34.19MB

In this riveting chronicle, which accompanies a documentary to be broadcast on PBS in the fall, Dayton Duncan and Ken Burns capture the profound drama of the American Dust Bowl of the 1930s. Terrifying photographs of mile-high dust storms, along with firsthand accounts by more than two dozen eyewitnesses, bring to life this heart-wrenching catastrophe, when a combination of drought, wind, and poor farming practices turned millions of acres of the Great Plains into a wasteland, killing crops and livestock, threatening the lives of small children, burying homesteaders' hopes under huge dunes of dirt. Burns and Duncan collected more than 300 mesmerizing photographs, some never before published, scoured private letters, government reports, and newspaper articles, and conducted in-depth interviews to produce a document that may likely be the last recorded testimony of the generation who lived through this defining decade.

How the Stock Market Works [TTC Video]

How the Stock Market Works [TTC Video]
How the Stock Market Works [TTC Video] by Ramon P DeGennaro
Course No 5852 | MKV, AVC, 1024x576 | AAC, 64 kbps, 2 Ch | 18x30 mins | + PDF Guidebook | 3.09GB

You can learn about the stock market in many ways. But most people cannot afford to learn the wrong way—by making expensive mistakes.

The stock market is a way for anyone to own the valuable assets of a company and, as investments, stocks historically have offered a good chance for long-term gains. If you own a well-diversified portfolio of individual stocks or stock funds, your wealth tends to grow when the economy grows. But too many investors succumb to the high-risk pursuit of beating the market by trying to pick winners, predict price trends, or otherwise find opportunities that other investors have missed.

Today, millions of people in all walks of life are invested in the stock market through brokerage accounts and retirement plans such as IRAs and 401(k)s. What to buy and when to sell stocks are up to each investor, who often feels besieged by conflicting advice. The wisest approach is to understand exactly what the stock market is and how it works, appreciating such basic facts as these:

  • Factors of success: Many people focus on increasing their rate of return on stocks, which is hard to do without taking substantial risks. It’s much safer to focus on two other factors that affect how much money you earn.
  • No free lunch: You can’t make much money in the stock market if you miss the handful of best trading days of each year, which are unpredictable. But if you stay invested so that you enjoy the good days, you’ll experience some horrible days too—because there’s no free lunch.
  • Above all, diversify: Diversification is the closest thing to a free lunch in investing. Just holding three different stocks instead of one decreases portfolio variation by about 40% on average. That’s a significant reduction in risk that doesn’t cost anything in terms of expected returns.

For anyone who owns stocks or is thinking of entering the market, How the Stock Market Works provides indispensable advice from Dr. Ramon P. DeGennaro, an award-winning professor in banking and finance at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. A congenial and straight-talking expert, Professor DeGennaro leads you through 18 detailed lectures that explain the stock market from the inside, introducing you to the factors that make company stocks rise and fall and the information you need to grasp the market’s role in the world economy, evaluate the relative soundness of stocks, and understand the stock investment options available to you.

Even if you have owned stocks for years, you’ll find How the Stock Market Works to be a helpful focus on the fundamentals of investing in stocks. And if you entrust the management of your assets to a financial advisor, this course will give you the insights you need to converse knowledgeably with him or her and be an informed participant in your own financial well-being.

Tailor Your Investments to Fit You

Your decision about whether and how to invest in the stock market should start with an understanding of the fundamental difference between stocks and bonds. Both represent claims on the assets of a company, but with different returns, different levels of risk, and a different relationship between you and the company.

As with other concepts presented in the course, Professor DeGennaro explains these key points with simple examples that are memorable and insightful. He also uses helpful charts, graphs, and other visual aids, some of which are reproduced in the course guidebook for audio customers.

The many topics you cover in How the Stock Market Works include these:

  • How to open a brokerage account and choose a financial advisor
  • The essentials of mutual funds, including index funds, and exchange traded funds (ETFs)
  • How to trade individual stocks, including how to use options
  • The relative advantages of traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, and 401(k) plans
  • How to minimize transaction costs and use tax laws for your benefit
  • The dangers of frequent trading and other counterproductive habits
  • Financial concepts and terms that allow you to understand business news and communicate more effectively with your broker
  • The basics of corporate balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements

Aim to Become Well Off—Slowly

How the Stock Market Works opens with a fascinating lesson for the average investor. Imagine you’re sitting at home, watching your computer screen track the price of a stock that interests you. Suddenly, you see a huge spike; it goes up and down so fast—in just a quarter of a second—that it barely registers on your screen. You wonder, “What was that?”

That, says Professor DeGennaro, was a high-tech computer algorithm automatically placing and canceling dozens and even hundreds of buy and sell orders. Some algorithms exploit tiny differences in prices, multiplying a profit of a fraction of a cent many times over. No one without access to such technology can hope to take advantage of these tiny and fleeting opportunities.

But you shouldn’t be discouraged by the sophisticated techniques available to professionals, says Professor DeGennaro. You should be relieved, because their ceaseless competition means that stock prices are as close to fair as possible. You can invest in the market confident that the price you are paying for most stocks reflects their true worth at that particular moment. This is the efficient market hypothesis in action, an idea that Professor DeGennaro discusses at length throughout the course.

When you view investing not as a contest against quick-acting competitors, but as a long-term strategy for increasing your wealth, you are much less likely to act on impulse. “Instead of trying to get rich quickly,” counsels Professor DeGennaro, “you should aim to become comfortably well off rather slowly and without having to stay up all night worrying about losing everything.”

Whatever investment strategy you decide to pursue, Professor DeGennaro advises you to get started today. He compares saving and investing to planting a tree, dieting, or exercising. Although the best day to start was 15 years ago, the second best day is today! You can do yourself a world of good by acting now.

Calculus is the greatest mathematical breakthrough since the pioneering discoveries of the ancient Greeks. Without it, we wouldn't have spaceflight, skyscrapers, jet planes, economic modeling, accurate weather forecasting, modern medical technologies, or any of the countless other achievements we take for granted in today's world.

Indeed, calculus is so versatile and its techniques so diverse that it trains you to view problems, no matter how difficult, as solvable until proved otherwise. And the habit of turning a problem over in your mind, choosing an approach, and then working through a solution teaches you to think clearly—which is why the study of calculus is so crucial for improving your cognitive skills and why it is a prerequisite for admission to most top universities.

Understanding Calculus: Problems, Solutions, and Tips
immerses you in the unrivaled learning adventure of this mathematical field in 36 half-hour lectures that cover all the major topics of a full-year calculus course in high school at the College Board Advanced Placement AB level or a first-semester course in college. With crystal-clear explanations of the beautiful ideas of calculus, frequent study tips, pitfalls to avoid, and—best of all—hundreds of examples and practice problems that are specifically designed to explain and reinforce major concepts, this course will be your sure and steady guide to conquering calculus.

Your teacher for this intensively illustrated DVD set is Professor Bruce H. Edwards, an award-winning instructor at the University of Florida and the coauthor of a best-selling series of calculus textbooks.

Accomplish Mathematical Wonders
Calculus is one of the most powerful and astonishing tools ever invented, yet it is a skill that can be learned by anyone with an understanding of high school mathematics.

Among its many uses, calculus teaches you to

  • analyze a multitude of situations involving change, whether it's an accelerating rocket, the growth of a bacterial colony, or fluctuating stock prices;
  • calculate optimum values, such as the greatest volume for a box with a given surface area or the highest feasible profit from the sales of an item;
  • measure complex shapes—for example, the volume of a doughnut-shaped object called a torus or the area of a plot of land bounded by a river.

Learn about Precalculus and Limits . . .
Solving many types of calculus problems usually requires employing precalculus—algebra and trigonometry—to work out a solution. For this reason, Professor Edwards devotes the first few lectures to reviewing key topics in precalculus, then he covers some basic concepts such as limits and continuity before moving on to the two simple, yet brilliant ideas behind calculus—the derivative and the integral.

Despite the apparent differences between the derivative and integral, you discover that they are inextricably linked by the surprising fundamental theorem of calculus. Throughout the course, you will discover that simplicity is one of the hallmarks of the essential ideas of calculus.

. . . the Power of the Derivative . . .
The derivative is the foundation of differential calculus, which you study through Lecture 17, exploring its many applications in science, engineering, business, and other fields.

You start with a classic problem that illustrates one of the core ideas of calculus: Can you find the tangent line to a curve at a given point? This is the same as asking if the rate of change of the curve can be measured at that point—with a host of potential applications in situations where a quantity is changing, such as the speed of an accelerating vehicle. The answer is: Yes, and with amazing simplicity! After learning the steps involved, you have solved your first calculus problem.

You then

  • study a variety of ways to find derivatives, including the power rule, the constant multiple rule, the quotient rule, the chain rule, and implicit differentiation;
  • learn how to find extrema—the absolute maximum and minimum values of functions, using derivatives; and
  • apply derivatives to solve a variety of real-world problems.

. . . and the Importance of the Integral

Next, you are introduced to the integral, using a classic problem in which you are asked to find the area of a plot of land bounded by curves. To solve this problem, calculus provides us with the integral—a powerful tool that allows us to calculate areas, volumes, and other characteristics of complex shapes. The balance of the course is devoted to integral calculus and its applications. You study

  • arc length and surface area—two applications of calculus that are at the heart of engineering;
  • integration by substitution—a method that enables you to convert a difficult problem into one that's easier to solve; and
  • the formulas for continuous compound interest, radioactive decay, and a host of other real-world applications.

A Calculus Course for All

Understanding Calculus is well suited for anyone who wants to take the leap into one of history's greatest intellectual achievements, whether for the first time or for review. Those who will benefit include these learners:

  • Any student now studying calculus who would like personal coaching from a professor who has spent years honing his explanations for the areas that are most challenging to students. This course is specifically designed to cover all the major topics of a full-year calculus course in high school at the College Board Advanced Placement AB level or a first-semester course in college.
  • Parents of students studying calculus, a subject with which they often give up trying to help their high-school-age children—at a critical turning point in their educational careers.
  • Those who have already taken calculus and who need a thorough review.
  • Anyone who didn't understand calculus on the first try and wants a lucid, in-depth presentation, with lots of interesting, well-explained practice problems.

The plentiful graphs, equations, and other visual aids in these lectures are clear and well-designed, allowing you to follow each step of Professor Edwards's presentation in detail. The accompanying workbook includes lecture summaries, sample problems and worked-out solutions, tips, and pitfalls; lists of formulas and theorems; a trigonometry review sheet; a glossary; and a removable study sheet to use for quick and easy reference during the lectures.

The Ideal Calculus Teacher

Professor Edwards is the ideal calculus teacher—friendly, animated, encouraging, and witty, but also focused on presenting the material in an organized and understandable way. For anyone who feels intimidated by calculus, there is a distinct joy in being able to calculate a derivative after just a few lessons. It's easier than one might have supposed, and it opens an amazing new world of insight.

As an educator who has been honored repeatedly, both for his teaching and for his textbooks, Professor Edwards is a fount of valuable advice. He offers frequent tips for success, including guidance for those preparing for the Advanced Placement Calculus AB exam, for which he has served as a grader and for which this course is excellent preparation. Among his suggestions are these:

  • Graphing calculators: While some calculus teachers prefer that their students not use graphing calculators, the Advanced Placement exam requires them. Professor Edwards points out the strengths of graphing calculators as well as the weaknesses—for example, that in certain situations they can fool you.
  • Memorization: Always memorize what your teacher assigns. However, no one can memorize all the formulas in calculus. A good approach is to commit to memory the idea behind a technique—for example, that the disk method of computing the volume of a solid involves slicing it into innumerable disks.

Ever since its inception in the 17th century, calculus has spawned a continuing flood of new ideas and techniques for solving problems. It's easy to be overwhelmed by the richness of this subject, which is why many beginning students find themselves struggling.

Through Professor Edwards's exceptional teaching in Understanding Calculus, you will come away with a deep appreciation for the extraordinary power of calculus, a grasp of which methods apply to different types of problems, and, with practice, a facility for unlocking the secrets of the ceaselessly changing world around us.

The three books he subsequently wrote about the Desert War – later collected as his ‘African Trilogy’ – were swiftly acclaimed as a classic account of the tussle between Montgomery’s Eighth Army and Rommel’s Afrika Corps, amidst the endless harsh wastes of the Western Desert. Moorehead was responsible for the celebrated insight that tank battles in the desert are like battles at sea, the lumbering tanks like ships lost in a vast ocean of sand.

The New Statesman could not have put it better when it described his achievement with this riveting book: ‘There is something of genius in the breadth and penetration of his vision, which encompasses the whole panorama of war and then narrows it down to the particular: the soldier stubbing out his cigarette before going into action, the expression on a tank commander’s face as he is hit… The story of the African campaigns will go down in history as one of the great epics of mankind, largely thanks to Mr Moorehead’s account.’

1918: War and Peace [EPUB]

1918: War and Peace by Gregor Dallas
2000 | EPUB | 5.44MB

On the night of 7 November 1918 French troops at La Capelle, on the Western Front, noticed a soft halo develop in the fog over no man's land. They heard the rumble of cars, then perceived the vague form of a huge white flag: the Germans were crossing the line to seek peace. But who were these Germans and what exactly did they represent? By the time they had signed an armistice, four days later, not even they knew. The Kaiser's Reich had collapsed and Germany faced chaos, while the war in Eastern Europe continued.

This book traces the transition from war to peace across Europe. It follows the movement of armies over the northern plains, their collapse, their demoblization, and the effect this had on the material life of people. In Russia there had already been a revolution. In Germany, there were attempts to overthrow the provisional republican government. In Poland new wars broke out. At the same time, there was celebration in the West at the announcement of the Armistice. And the United States entered European politics with a new part to play. Dallas follows these dramatic events from the perspective of five capitals: Berlin, Paris, London, Moscow and Washington. In Berlin the cabarets and beer halls are open, while there is shooting in the streets. In the walled city of Paris, the peacemakers assemble to respond to the call for a League of Nations.

Pantomime season opens in London, where Lloyd George holds elections and reorganizes his War Cabinet; John Maynard Keynes of the Treasury worries about debts. Contemporaries describe Moscow as a scene of desolation; but Lenin insists on setting up the Third International. Washington is divided between those who want to open America to the world, and those who would prefer the world to go away. The start of peace is more complex and fascinating than the start of war; it sets the habits and builds the patterns of life for generations to come.

This book weaves politics, ideas, social life, fears, aspirations and harsh realities into a seamless reconstruction of life experienced at a great turning-point of history.

After the American Century: The Ends of U.S. Culture in the Middle East by Brian T Edwards
2015 | EPUB | 22.35MB

When Henry Luce announced in 1941 that we were living in the "American century," he believed that the international popularity of American culture made the world favorable to U.S. interests. Now, in the digital twenty-first century, the American century has been superseded, as American movies, music, video games, and television shows are received, understood, and transformed.

How do we make sense of this shift? Building on a decade of fieldwork in Cairo, Casablanca, and Tehran, Brian T. Edwards maps new routes of cultural exchange that are innovative, accelerated, and full of diversions. Shaped by the digital revolution, these paths are entwined with the growing fragility of American "soft" power. They indicate an era after the American century, in which popular American products and phenomena—such as comic books, teen romances, social-networking sites, and ways of expressing sexuality—are stripped of their associations with the United States and recast in very different forms.

Arguing against those who talk about a world in which American culture is merely replicated or appropriated, Edwards focuses on creative moments of uptake, in which Arabs and Iranians make something unexpected. He argues that these products do more than extend the reach of the original. They reflect a world in which culture endlessly circulates and gathers new meanings.

The Essential Retirement Guide: A Contrarian's Perspective [EPUB]

The Essential Retirement Guide: A Contrarian's Perspective [EPUB]
The Essential Retirement Guide: A Contrarian's Perspective by Frederick Vettese
2016 | EPUB | 2.46MB

Retirement planning is difficult enough without having to contend with misinformation. Unfortunately, much of the advice that is dispensed is either unsubstantiated or betrays a strong vested interest. In The Essential Retirement Guide, Frederick Vettese analyses the most fundamental questions of retirement planning and offers some startling insights. The book finds, for example that:

  • Saving 10 percent a year is not a bad rule of thumb if you could follow it, but there will be times when you cannot do so and it might not even be advisable to try.
  • Most people never spend more than 50 percent of their gross income on themselves before retirement; hence their retirement income target is usually much less than 70 percent.
  • Interest rates will almost certainly stay low for the next 20 years, which will affect how much you need to save.
  • Even in this low-interest environment, you can withdraw 5 percent or more of your retirement savings each year in retirement without running out of money.
  • Your spending in retirement will almost certainly decline at a certain age so you may not need to save quite as much as you think.
  • As people reach the later stages of retirement, they become less capable of managing their finances, even though they grow more confident of their ability to do so! Plan for this before it is too late.
  • Annuities have become very expensive, but they still make sense for a host of reasons.

In addition, The Essential Retirement Guide shows how you can estimate your own lifespan and helps you to understand the financial implications of long-term care. Most importantly, it reveals how you can calculate your personal wealth target - the amount of money you will need by the time you retire to live comfortably. The author uses his actuarial expertise to substantiate his findings but does so in a jargon-free way.

The Lost Kingdoms of Africa [EPUB]

The Lost Kingdoms of Africa [EPUB]
The Lost Kingdoms of Africa by Gus Casely-Hayford
2012 | EPUB | 7.15MB

For many of us the history of Africa is, at best, vague. We might think of Egyptian pyramids, legendary queens (of Sheba or Cleopatra) and Zulu warriors. The truth, however, is one of remarkably diverse, creative, culturally rich civilisations. In this book, which accompanies an 8-part BBC series, Gus Casely-Hayford takes us on a fascinating journey through the history of this remarkable continent. We will encounter archaeological sites of staggering beauty that rival the Great Wall of China, vast and ancient universities that predate Oxford and Cambridge, kingdoms of extraordinary wealth, artistic traditions that still inspire artists today, great religious sites that surpass the Vatican, and a country with more pyramids than Egypt.

In recent years new archaeological and anthropological research has opened up the study of African history in ways previously unimaginable. Long-lost kingdoms are suddenly being brought back to life. Civilisations that had faded into myth are revealing their secrets. Using this latest research, Gus Casely-Hayford is able to tell the history of Africa's major kingdoms in an entirely new, colourful and richly-informed way.

Accessible and inspiring, The Lost Kingdoms of Africa is both a major addition to our understanding of this oft-overlooked history and a source of genuine delight and wonder.

Sicily, It's Not Quite Tuscany [EPUB]

Sicily, It's Not Quite Tuscany [EPUB]
Sicily, It's Not Quite Tuscany by Shamus Sillar
2013 | EPUB | 0.9MB

This is the story of a newly married couple and the year they spent in Sicily. Packed with history, culture - and plenty of misadventure - it will definitely make you laugh. It also has as much romance as an ordinary Aussie bloke can muster, and, of course, a little bit of Mafia action.

Gill and I had dreamt of living in Italy for as long as we'd been together.'

This is the story of an Aussie couple who sought a Mediterranean sea change only to find themselves in the sprawling Sicilian city of Catania - the 'anti-Tuscany' of Italy. There, any romantic visions they'd had of restoring a villa or stamping their entwined feet in vats of Chianti grapes disappeared faster than the chief witness in a Cosa Nostra trial.

Shamus and Gill's tiny apartment in Catania was located in a grim neighbourhood opposite a triple-X cinema and a shop selling coffins, nearby Mount Etna erupted soon after their arrival, a mystery ailment left Shamus in a neck brace, they crashed a Vespa and had regular dealings with at least one Mafioso.

This, then, is an Italian sea change with grit. But it's also a story of optimism, endurance and acceptance, an exploration of the minutiae of Sicilian culture, history, food and religion, and an example of how to find beauty - and humour - in the most unexpected of places.
